How to Understand A Complex Relationship Between Philosophy and Education

The Relationship between Philosophy and Education is reciprocal in nature. First one develops the idea of education and next one propagates the idea. Both are essential in the field of wisdom. Wisdom is essential for the development of new ideas. Prerequisite for the development of new ideas is knowledge about the issue. Where Education provides us the background knowledge. Rational implementation of knowledge, with logical reasoning, helps us to form an Idea and when Idea travels a long distance it takes the shape of Philosophy.

Relationship between Philosophy and Education is just like Chicken and Egg. we cannot claim which one came first.

Philosophy

Relationship between Philosophy and Education

Philosophy is Considered as the Mother of all Discipline. Because, whenever anything develops, the first concept that develops is the idea about that thing. For example Karl Marx developed the Philosophy/Theory of Socialism, the first thing he would develop is the idea about socialism. Like the idea of equality, labour’s Participation in management, equal distribution of resources etc.

If we take an example of Discipline like Mathematics then, we know that there are 10 digits in the Decimal system. Whoever introduced the Decimal system in the world but the first thing he developed is the idea about these 10 digits.

Education

Relationship between Philosophy and Education

Education is one of the core elements of any Society. It may not be formal But through education various laws, Customs, Ethics, Morals etc. were propagated among the newcomers. Nowadays education has become the formal institution, it means the State/Government decides the education and its credentials. The civilized society has a particular structure of education system like Primary, secondary or Higher education. It also divides the elements of education into various disciplines which can be termed as Super Specialization.

Conflicting Relationship Between Philosophy and Education

We know that Relationship between Philosophy and Education is like moving hand in hand. Sometimes it moves in contradictory directions. When any Philosophy is followed by people then it becomes an Ideology. If the quotient of Ideology overrides the quotient of education or wisdom then a conflicting relationship between philosophy and education has been created. For example:-

A group of people want to propagate a particular religion.

  1. Propagation of religion comes under Right to Religion.
  2. Education/Wisdom teaches us that other religions should be respected.
  3. If the element of Education or Wisdom is removed.
  4. Then to propagate that religion the group may cross any unethical or immoral limits.

How Philosophy Change the Dimension on Education

Here, Philosophy means Dominant Philosophy. For example In a democratic setup, the Philosophy of the ruling party will be the Dominant Philosophy or if we look at the geo-political scenario then the country having economic and military power, its philosophy will be Dominant Philosophy.

If we talk about the pre-British era, the education system is structured in a way that only a particular section of the population has the Right to Education. During the British era the dominant Philosophy changed and they created another structure of education.

Other than Dominant Philosophy the Philosophy of Movement/Demand also has the ability to Change the education system for example in India, Women’s Movement  and Subaltern Movement created their space in education through reservation policy.

How Education stereotypes a Philosophy

The prime motive of education is wisdom. In the present super specialized world, education has a livelihood orientation. So, the concept of Vocational Education came into picture. But if we look at the present globalized world, the world of the internet or the world of content, we will find that information is taking the shape of education .

If Information is taking the shape of Education then wisdom will be limited or we call it pseudo-wisdom. Because the ethical elements are not served in any information. If there is mis-information then the wisdom created will be negative-wisdom. And negative wisdom is always stereotypical.

If we look at the perspective of Dominant Ideology then we will find that Dominant ideology always tries to suppress the contradicting ideologies. Let us take the example of Terrorism, the definition of terrorism we learn is coined by the United Nation Security Council. Irony is that if violence occurs out of definition then it is not terrorism.

You may disagree with my opinion but I have a few questions. Which is more lethal Terrorism or war? In which among the terrorism and war Rights of women and Children were hampered? In human society war is a matter of pride doesn’t matter how many civilians get affected. It is not my love to Terrorism but just trying to explain how Education helps in creating Stereotype towards a particular Philosophy.

Technology and Relationship Between Philosophy and Education

Technology Creates a blank space in front of Philosophy. If we talk about Philosophy of Swadeshi, acknowledged by Gandhi. It refuses all Goods and Servises presented by British Companies. On the other hand people are using technology like Railways, Postal services and telephonic services.

If we talk about Information and Communication Technology which came into picture in later half of of 20th Century. It changed the structure of education in many form like new branch in Engineering Sector, online Education, Tele-medicine etc

We can say that Technology has full Potential to amend or change Philosophy and Education. As per the earlier discussion we know that both Philosophy and Education interfere on others space. So, we can say that whenever Technological change happens a corollary effect has been seen in relationship between Philosophy and Education.

Conclusion

Various Philosophies emerge, develop, took the form of Ideology and ends. During the period of Buddha and Mahaveer there were more then 500 Philosophies, but we know only few of them. Our society changes continuously, some philosophy may loose their relevance with respect to time. But, we have to preserve them through Education.

There may be no relevance of a Philosophy it should be studied with the perspective of History. It may be possible that new technology is not able to solve a particular situation but an old Philosophy can.

More stable, more profound State and culture develop more philosophies. So, we can say that Philosophies are the Meter Gauge of richness of civilization and Education System.
